Space Elevator Challenges

Challenges

Challenges are a great way to foster outside-the-box thinking. They can be aimed at the cutting edge of science, or be great educational tools, or both!

We would love to see more Space Elevator challenges out there, whether at the K-12 level or at the university/professional level. If you are an organizer of an SE related challenge, or have information about such a challenge, please .

Power Beaming Challenge

Organized by the Spaceward Foundation, the power beaming climber competition challenges universities, enthusiasts and private industry teams to design and build the best possible Space Elevator climber prototype.

We provide the race track, in the form of a vertically-suspended ribbon (and other support hardware), and the teams provide the climbers that carry payload up that ribbon, along with the power beaming systems that power them.

Participating entries are rated on the basis of speed and amount of payload.

Tether Strength Challenge

The Space Elevator design will live or die on our ability to produce a material that is sufficiently light and strong enough to bear its own weight against the force of Earth's gravity.

Organized by the Spaceward Foundation, the tether competition is a perpetual dare for any group to present a tether that is at least 50% better than last year's best offering.

Participating entries are ranked according to strength and weight.

JSETEC - 1st Japan Space Elevator Technical & Engineering Competition

Climb me to the moon! 150m Battery SE Climber Race

Organized by the Japanese Space Elevator Association - see most up-to-date information here

August 7 (Sat) - 8 (Sun), 2010, Nihon University Futawa Field

Ribbon Climbing Challenge

Part of the yearly robo-games event, the ribbon climbing challenge is a a great way to introduce the Space Elevator concept to your kids.

Robogames (formerly Robolympics) is a great all around robotics event, which is run annually at Ft. Mason, San Francisco.
